Deer Hunt — Saturday, November 13, 2010

Windy Hill Rod & Gun Club and the Randy Barnes Family hosted a benefit Deer Hunt at Padgett Pond, Saluda County, South Carolina for the Saluda County Historical Society, on Saturday, November 13, 2010.

The day began, bright and sunny, with a nice little frost to warm the hunters’ hearts and proceeded to the bagging of two eight point bucks weighing 180 lbs. each and one nice sized doe.

The hunters enjoyed a “Big Breakfast” prepared by members of the Saluda County Historical Society, directed by Gene Berry with the assistance of former members of the Ridge Choral Society.

We wish to thank all the members of the Saluda County Historical Society who participated in the preparation of the ‘Big Breakfast” under the direction of Gene Berry, with the assistance of some former members of the Ridge Choral Society.

We would like to especially thank Gene Berry for the use of his beautiful farm, woods and home.

If you have never been to Padgett’s Pond, you should go. It is like being in the mountains, the leaves were beautiful and you can hear the water running.

Duck Shoot — Saturday, January 22, 2011

Windy Hill Rod & Gun Club and the Randy Barnes Family are also hosting a morning Duck Hunt, scheduled for Saturday, January 22, 2011.

Proceeds from the hunts will be used to fund the preservation of the historic Marsh-Johnson House, one of the properties of the Society in need of major repairs. One of the major goals of the Society is the preservation of the history of Saluda County. This house is an excellent example of an “upland plantation home.”

The Saluda County Historical Society wishes to thank Gene Berry and the Randy Barnes Family for helping restore the Marsh-Johnson House which is noted on the 1817 Mills Atlas Map of Edgefield District, before there was a Saluda County.

The Duck Hunt will be held on beaver ponds owned by the Randy Barnes Family and the head-waters of Padgett Pond in Saluda County. The number of hunters will be limited (16-20) depending upon hunting conditions and duck availability. A morning hunt will be held with breakfast before and after the hunt. Guides and transportation will be provided from Padgett Pond. The cost of the hunt is $100.00.

Rainfall has been such this year that the beaver ponds above Padgett Pond are full and many Wood Ducks are currently present. The late January date was selected to allow ample time for Mallards and other late arriving species to reach South Carolina.

Participants in each of the two above hunts must abide by all the rules of the Hunt Clubs, the State of South Carolina, and the U. S. Government. Alcohol beverages will not be permitted during the hunts.

To be included in this duck hunt, please send your name, address, telephone number, and email address (if available) to: C. E. Berry, Jr., 500 Samuel Padgett Road, Ridge Spring, SC 29129, phone # 803- 685-5020 or email: cebpadgettpd@pbtcomm.net.
