Marsh-Johnson House Receives a Practical Gift
by Roy Vandegrift III
Twice during 2009, the Marsh-Johnson House was visited by Ms. Tommie Wicker, Ph.D., who is from Newberry and likes c.1800 buildings. On the second visit, she was accompanied by a close friend—Mrs. Faye Tillotson, who is hostess at the Cross Anchor House. Roy Vandegrift and his wife, Carol, were their M-J House guides. On both visits, going upstairs was simply a “must.” Then on Saturday, January 16, Roy met Faye and Tommie at the Lee-Jackson Luncheon in Newberry. After the event, the ladies gave Roy a box containing 12 battery-powered candles; they suggested that several candles should be used to light the closet stairs. Both ladies are thanked for the gift and the suggestion.
The M-J property was used in December by the Saluda Homeschoolers as a colonial Thanksgiving site. The garden club has planted flowers across the front of the house, but some serious repair work needs to be done on the property. At present only half of the M-J property is used; the other half is “natural.”
